What’s the Point of a Rho Chi? Your Sorority Recruitment BFF
If you’re a PNM getting ready for sorority recruitment, you’ll be assigned a Rho Chi—also called a recruitment counselor, Pi Chi, Gamma Chi, or another name depending on your campus. You might be wondering: What exactly does she do? And maybe more importantly: How does she help me navigate rush?
The short answer: she’s your behind-the-scenes guide through recruitment. And she’s more important than you think.
She’s Not Just There to Walk You from Round to Round
Your Rho Chi knows the recruitment process like the back of her hand. She’ll make sure you, as a PNM, know where you’re going and when and she’s also there for advice. Bring her any questions you have about things like how to rank chapters and what happens after each round.
She’s in a Sorority (But You Won’t Know Which One… Yet)
Every Rho Chi belongs to a sorority, but she’s “disaffiliated” during recruitment—meaning she won’t wear her letters or tell you her chapter until Bid Day. Why? So you can be totally honest with her as a potential new member without worrying about hurting her feelings or her influencing your decisions.
She Might Go by a Different Name
Depending on your school, your Rho Chi might be called a:
- Recruitment Counselor
- Gamma Chi
- Pi Chi
- Rho Gamma
- RC
- Pi Rho Chi
- Sigma Rho Chi
Whatever the name, her role is the same: she’s there for you—the PNM—to guide you through sorority recruitment.
She Knows What’s Important
When recruitment rumors start flying—whether it’s a YikYak post, a random TikTok take, or something your brother’s ex-girlfriend swears is true—your Rho Chi is the one who can set the record straight.
She’ll tell you what actually matters for potential new members at your school, so you can make decisions based on facts, not gossip.
She Can Answer All the Little Questions
Your Rho Chi is your go-to for questions about the “housekeeping” details of the day:
- What if I’m late for a round?
- Do I have time to eat?
-
Should I shake hands with my recruiter?
-
Where do I stash my bag?
-
When’s the bathroom break?
-
What does “MRABA” even mean?
- Is it weird to ask for water?
…And the Big Questions Too
She’s also there for the bigger, trickier stuff PNMs often worry about, like:
- How did you know which sorority was right for you?
- What’s a not-awkward way to ask about dues?
- I’m nervous—what do I do?
- What does it mean if a recruiter told me she’d see me at Pref?
- I think I want to drop—should I?
- I have a class or lab that conflicts with a recruitment event—what do I do??
She’s Not Judging You
Your Rho Chi’s job is to support you. She’s your sounding board, problem-solver, and source of encouragement all week long.
By the end of recruitment, most PNMs are surprised at just how much they leaned on their Rho Chi.
Bottom line: Your Rho Chi is one of the most important people you’ll meet during sorority recruitment as a potential new member. She’s your guide, your translator for recruitment jargon, and your safe space to ask anything—big or small. Use her!
