Why sorority jewelry makes a meaningful gift
The Bid Day basket is a tradition on some campuses and are usually filled with tank tops, water bottles, hats, sweatshirts, picture frames, candy; you get the idea. Sorority fine jewelry is in a different category.
A beautifully made sorority necklace, ring, or pair of earrings is something she can wear through college and long after. Sorority letters represent membership, friendship, and ritual, and the right piece of jewelry will last for life.
At mazi + zo, we make licensed sorority jewelry in solid 14k gold and .925 sterling silver—every piece handcrafted in New York City, designed to be worn every day.
What type of sorority jewelry makes sense?
There are two ways to think about this. If she loves necklaces and wears a lot of them, adding her sorority letters to that collection is a natural move. On the other hand, if she has a favorite necklace she always wears, she might not want to replace that and will get more wear with a ring or earrings.
At mazi + zo, every piece in our minimalist sorority collection is designed to coordinate and layer with our other pieces, and with what's already in her jewelry box.
Necklaces are the easiest starting point when you're buying for someone else. You don't need her ring size or know whether she has pierced ears. Our signature Love Your Letters necklace, featuring our original, exclusive alphabet design, is our perennial bestseller and you can't go wrong with it. Our silver Love Your Letters necklaces are adjustable from 15 to 16 inches, and all of our necklaces can be special ordered in 18 inches. We also offer popular charm necklaces featuring sorority symbols like Delta Gamma's anchor and Kappa Alpha Theta's kite.
Rings—people wear rings at any position these days so there's always room for another and she can likely wear it on more than one finger. Our popular rings are available for select sororities in two beautiful styles. One has an open design for flexible sizing (and also because we love the lowkey cool vibe). Our updated take on classic signet rings are personalized and can be engraved with her initiation date, making them one of the most personal gifts in the collection. Both have 5-star reviews so it really comes down to her style.
Earrings are a great choice if she has pierced ears. Our Greek letter studs let her spell out her sorority letters in dainty silver or gold stud earrings. Some of our customers wear their letters one in each ear, and some spell out two or three letters on the same side. If you're shopping for Alpha Phi jewelry, we designed an integrated 2-letter stud earring, and Kappa Alpha Theta has a 3-letter stud earring as well as an exclusive ear climber. We also offer delicate stud earrings featuring sorority symbols like Pi Beta Phi's arrows and Zeta Tau Alpha's crowns. Our elevated threader earrings are the coolest take on sorority symbols and even women who aren't in sororities love our Gamma Phi Beta crescent moon threaders.
Greek letters or sorority symbols?
Most sorority jewelry features Greek letters, and for good reason — they're classic, recognizable, and exactly what most new members want to wear first.
Lots of members prefer to wear their sorority symbols layered with letters, and many alum prefer symbols because they're a subtler way to represent—a nod to the organization that doesn't lead with letters. At mazi + zo, we make symbol designs for a number of our sororities, and they're some of our most loved pieces.
If she just joined and is excited about her letters, start there. If you want something a little more unexpected, a symbol piece is a great choice.
Silver or gold?
The best metal is usually the one she already wears. We're into mixing but some people insist on matching metals, so consider if she'll get more weartime with gold or silver.
mazi + zo crafts our jewelry from solid 14k gold and hypoallergenic .925 sterling silver so we've got you covered either way. Solid 14k gold is the traditional way to mark a big milestone but we're aware that gold prices are sky-high. If you want a lower entry point, our sterling silver pieces are less expensive than gold, without compromising on quality.
If you don't see a gold option for a design, message us and we'll take care of you!
Why materials matter
Not all sorority jewelry is made to last, and the difference becomes obvious over time.
Gold-plated, gold-filled, and vermeil jewelry all have one thing in common: a gold coating over a base metal. No matter which you choose, the gold wears off eventually (faster on rings, which take the most wear and tear) so we don't sell it. Solid 14k gold doesn't rub off, doesn't tarnish, and lasts for generations.
At mazi + zo, nearly all of our sorority jewelry is available in both solid 14k gold and .925 sterling silver. Our gold jewelry is made from ethically-sourced sustainable gold—no plating, no base metal, nothing that wears off. Our .925 sterling silver is tarnish-resistant and hypoallergenic, certified free of nickel, lead, and cadmium. Both are made to last.
Every mazi + zo piece is cast and hand-polished with love in our New York City workshop. We work only with suppliers who are committed to environmental sustainability, ethical sourcing, and fair hiring practices.
Why licensed sorority jewelry matters
Sorority letters and symbols belong to the organizations they represent, the same way a professional sports team's marks do. You can't just put a brand's logo on a product and sell it. Licensed sorority jewelry means the design and quality has been officially approved by the organization, the letters and symbols are used correctly, and a portion of every sale goes back to support the sorority.
There's a lot of sorority jewelry on Amazon and Etsy that isn't licensed and hasn't been vetted. At mazi + zo, we submit every design, including a sample, to the organization for approval before anything goes into production.
We're licensed for 21 NPC sororities. Shop by sorority to find hers.
When to give sorority jewelry
Bid Day, initiation, big/little reveal, officer milestones, birthdays, holidays, graduation—sorority jewelry fits all of it. Sometimes the best reason is simply wanting to give her something that lasts.
Bid Day is when she receives her bid and officially joins her chapter. A necklace or pair of earrings is a sorority gift she'll actually keep. Keep in mind that some chapters ask new members to wait until after initiation before wearing their letters—so depending on her chapter's traditions, she may need to save the piece for that moment.
Initiation is the most significant milestone in sorority membership. Our personalized signet necklaces and signet rings are designed for this occasion so you can engrave it with her initiation date and make it a keepsake forever.
Big/little reveal is another milestone in sorority life, and matching jewelry is a sweet way to welcome a new member to the family.
FAQ
Can she wear her letters before initiation?
It depends on her chapter. Some welcome new members to wear their letters right away; others ask them to wait until after initiation. They'll share their policies on bid day.
Is mazi + zo licensed for her sorority?
We're licensed for 21 NPC sororities. Shop by sorority to find her organization and see everything we make for it.
Can I get mazi + zo jewelry delivered on Bid Day?
Not on the same day unless you're a seer and know which sorority she'll join before she does. Our jewelry is handmade to order and ships from NYC. We think the good stuff is worth waiting for.
How do they do it?
You might have seen new members opening bid day baskets from parents on Bid Day itself. How'd they make that happen so fast? At some schools, when a student registers for recruitment, Panhellenic sends parents a flyer featuring local shops. Parents pre-order baskets based on size and leave it to the shops to customize it to their daughter's new sorority. Those shops receive the bid list before the PNMs do, spend the night before bid day frantically sorting and assembling, and deliver personalized baskets to every house before members run home. At a school like Alabama, that's 2,400 new members across 19 sororities. It's an extraordinary operation.
Our jewelry doesn't work that way — it's handmade, not pre-assembled in bulk. But it'll arrive a few days later and outlast the basket by decades.
When will my mazi + zo jewelry arrive?
If your piece is in-stock, we ship same or next business day via USPS. We handcraft every piece of mazi + zo jewelry, so if the piece is not in stock, producing your order may take up to two weeks — but that's the worst case timeline and we usually beat it. If you're working toward a specific date — initiation, a birthday, a holiday — check the product page or reach out and we'll tell you exactly what's realistic.
Can I return it?
Yes. mazi + zo offers free shipping and free returns. If something isn't right, let us know.
Sorority jewelry is at the top of a new member's wish list. Give a gift that lasts a lifetime. Shop by Sorority.
